All of this year’s songs have been selected, which means it’s time to start the countdown (cue Final Countdown) for the 2015 edition of our beloved Contest! I’ll be tackling the semis & the final in alphabetical order – on the menu today: Greece, Hungary & Moldova from semi 1!

 GREECE

The Song: This is the kind of ballad I’m quite allergic to. It sounds too tailormade for Eurovision, but the songs need to be able to survive outside the ESC bubble and that’s where this one does not get any oxygen. I like the addition of the rock elements in the second half of it, but by that time I’ve already lost interest.

The Voice: Sounds like you’re in need of more than one breath, honey, given the exhausted feel you give us at the end of the song. Not really cutting it for me.

The Performance: I suppose they could add some dramatic elements to bring the desperate tone of the lyrics across, but it might easily come across as…well…desperate. Hmz.

In one line: Fine, have your one last breath and just get it over and done with already.
PERSONAL TOTAL: 53%
PREDICTION: Mid table in the final (well, it IS Greece after all).

 HUNGARY

The Song: After the ballad, now the peace anthem I’m quite allergic to. It all starts rather promising with that acoustic first verse, but as soon as the backing vocalists join in it’s a lost cause for me. And that’s a hard thing for me to write down, as I’m usually all about the backings. It’s got too much of a hymn feel for me, heal the world and let’s make it a better place but not through this kind of song. #pleasebitteporfavorsilvousplaîtasjebliefttacksåmycket

The Voice: That being said, the harmonies do sound quite lovely, even if the setting doesn’t quite kindle my ears.

The Performance: The slowly joining together, those gentle steps to the front – no, just no. Same goes for the backdrop, containing all sorts of ‘confronting’ facts & figures about all things wrong with/in the world. #toomuch It’ll be the same come Vienna, won’t it? *keeps the bucket at the ready*

In one line: I’m simply too cynical for this. I wonder if Europe is sweet enough.
PERSONAL TOTAL: 32%
PREDICTION: This could qualify. This could also bomb big time. I’m guessing qualifying (but only just), but bombing in the final.

 MOLDOVA

The Song: Just stole a couple of bars from Just A Little by Liberty X for the verses, did we? That reference aside, I don’t mind this as much as I should. The chorus sounds a bit under produced and empty, but the flow of the entire thing kinda works for me. Maybe it’s because it’s one of the rare actual up tempo songs in this line-up?

The Voice: Issue #1 – boyfriend needs some singing lessons. He sounds rather harsh and by the end completely out of breath – I wonder if working on both fronts might change our minds on his X factor.

The Performance: Issue #2 – boyfriends needs a haircut. That would définitely change our minds on his X factor. Doesn’t help looking like Axl Rose, the bad years. The act feels unpolished as well, a bit like the Lidl version of Eric Saade. And the thing with the beard at the end simply hàs to go.

In one line: Work it a little, get hot just a little, meet me in the middle, let go just a little bit more
PERSONAL TOTAL: 63%
PREDICTION: The way it is, I just can’t see it qualifying.

Current Standings:

  1. Estonia – 84
  2. Belgium – 81
  3. Denmark – 71
  4. Georgia – 65
  5. Armenia – 64
