The Big 2012 (P)Review – Part 8: Hungary & Austria

We’re running up to the 2012 Contest, all entries for Baku have been chosen and it’s time to take a closer look at what we can expect to see and hear at the end of May. I’m reviewing everything in order of draw: I’ll first give my general thoughts on the countries’ choices, then I’ll subject them to the DIMI test and finally I’ll score them, accompagnied by a predicition of how I think they’ll do in Baku. I’ll be tackling them in pairs & on the menu today: Hungary & Austria.

15. HUNGARY – The sound of our hearts

I don’t know about you but this to me this sounds VERY Depeche Mode, which is only a good thing. That chorus is very hypnotizing and I love the musical build-up here, but then again I am a sucker for electronic pop. With a better singer this would score big time I’m sure but although Csaba Walkó comes across quite confident that confidence isn’t reflected in his vocals which are shaky at best, especially in the very crucial high notes. If they can fix it this might still stand a chance but I’m afraid (and it makes me sad) we won’t see this again on Saturday.

Checkpoint DIMI:
Daft? On the contrary, I think they take themselves very seriously.
Intriguing?
Very much so – hypnotizing even.
Modern?
Very much so – it’s reminiscent of the ‘80s but brought back to this day and age and I actually think this is the best piece of pop on offer this year, next to Israel of course.
International?
In studio, yes.

Personal score:  16/20 – Prediction: Stuck in the semi

16. AUSTRIA – Woki mit deim Popo

And that, Russia, is how it’s really done. One clear idea that is underlined very cleverly throughout the three available minutes and it’s nothing short of hilarious entertainment: all you need to know is the meaning of the title (Shake your ass) and you get the gist of it.  Even though I think Trackshittaz‘ 2011 entry in the national final was a tad better (and it should have been in Düsseldorf) I’m very happy Austria gave them a second chance and it’s well deserved. These guys know what they’re doing, I think they’re brilliant and I hope they don’t change a thing about the routine from the national final. Don’t discard this one just yet!

Checkpoint DIMI:
Daft? The very definition of it.
Intriguing?
Perhaps not exactly but entertaining without a doubt.
Modern?
A fantastic mix of rapping and electronic pop – yes sir.
International?
Even without it being in English. Europe will be woking mit ihrem Popo.

Personal score:  15/20 – Prediction: Final

Tomorrow: Moldova & Ireland. And the semi 1 recap.

Overly opinionated. Slightly off my rocker. There's no such thing as a guilty pleasure.

  1. Hungary: someone give this guy a bucket to carry his tune, the second half is much better, do I hear a vibrato? Like you Dimi, I really like the music, good entry if he sings it well. 14/20

Austria: bleh! this song annoys me, the only positive thing is the cute ass of the guy in the grey suit, next please! 5/20
