Eurovision 2017 preview: Serbia, Austria & Russia

All of this year’s songs have been selected, the running order has been decided: let’s get this show on the road!  I’ll be reviewing all of this year’s participants three by three in running order. Lord, gimme strength… Let the Hunger Games…eum…fun begin!

The Song: Another one that causes doubt. The verses are such a snooze that I can hardly be bothered to be bored by them. The lame “spin me around, high off the ground” bit annoys me, but is immediately made up for by the nice build-up to what turns out to be a rather cool chorus. Loving the drum’n bass rhythm, even though is really watered down. Dunno, it’s a bit of a flooze at the end of it.

Standout lyric:Won’t somebody save me tonight ” Famous last words?

The Voice: Let’s hope Tijana manages to spice things up a bit.

The Performance: If that video is anything to go by, it’ll be cliché all the way. Please don’t go too classical on us, Serbia.

In one line: Not really that deep.
PREDICTION: Despite not being the world’s greatest song, it provides for a nice opening of this semi. I’m carefully labeling this as a QUALIFIER.

The Song: Somehow I always manage to completely forget about this one. Even when it’s on. It’s just floats about – it’s nice enough, but we’ve heard this thousands of times before… in a better/more captivating version.

Standout lyric:I won’t stop, I won’t stop, no, no” Is that a threat, Nathan?

The Voice: Again, nice enough. Nothing exceptional.

The Performance: Hm, will there be a guitar in his hands? I wonder. Thank heavens we’ve got Nathan’s pretty little face to dream away about during these three minutes.

In one line: Running on thin air.
PREDICTION: Nice enough as it may be, this might prove to be completely invisible. Then again, this could be more Paradise Oskar than Jon Lilygreen for some. Borderliner for now.

The Song: Another PR-drenched world peace entry, this time in love song disguise. Color me amazed. This makes my skin itch.

Standout lyric:I wanna feel the power ”  Do you, now?

The Voice: Curious to hear her sing live. Wonder if Skype will have its effect on the way this sounds #mwuha

The Performance: Well…eum…yeah… I wonder if they’ll keep it as basic as the song presentation, or whether they’ll spruce it up. Keeping it simple would only underscore the cynical undertone of this entry. Then again, they always kinda oversell their entries, so who knows.

In one line: Cynicism at its worst.
PREDICTION: No freakin’ clue. Will people have an allergic reaction, like most of the fans? And will Russia be involved in too much controversy and thus have to pay the price? I assume that Russia will be Russia, and QUALIFY anyway. #urgh

So, after a lot of unnecessary Drama, Russia decided to pull out of the Contest. Can’t say I’m sorry about it, to be honest. Don’t let the door hit you on the way out! (I do feel for Julia, though.)

Overly opinionated. Slightly off my rocker. There's no such thing as a guilty pleasure.

  1. Is there any way you can give minus stars? Russia’s entry this makes me sick, really hope they end up withdrawing aso it’s the only way it won’t qualify
