The Big 2012 (P)Review – Part 18: Bosnia-Herzegovina & Lithuania + recap of semi 2

We’re running up to the 2012 Contest, all entries for Baku have been chosen and it’s time to take a closer look at what we can expect to see and hear at the end of May. I’m reviewing everything in order of draw: I’ll first give my general thoughts on the countries’ choices, then I’ll subject them to the DIMI test and finally I’ll score them, accompagnied by a predicition of how I think they’ll do in Baku. I’ll be tackling them in pairs & on the menu today: Bosnia-Herzegovina & Lithuania.

17. BOSNIA-HERZEGOVINA – Korake ti znam

Another one? At this rate all Balkan Ballads will cancel each other out! But if one prevails (next to the obvious Serbia) it will and should be this one as it’s got more of a genuine feel to it. But it’s so understated and fragile and it contains hardly any hooks or even a decent chorus – I fear once this gets to the final it will get overlooked. A beautiful song but far too demure for its own good.

Checkpoint DIMI:
Daft? Not at all.
Intriguing?
  Only just.
Modern?
Timeless I guess.
International?
Less specific Balkan-y but still not far from it.

Personal score:  13/20 – Prediction: Final

18. LITHUANIA – Love is blind

It takes Donny Montell two minutes to get to The Promise in this song and it ends up being an old fashioned disco beat? Oh my! Besides, a part of it, here I go again, sounds very familiar (I hear bits of Love Me Tonight (Belarus 2005) in the synths)…  I guess some people would call the blindfold a nifty idea for a song that’s called Love is blind but I think it’s anything but. This doesn’t float my boat at all, on any level. Donny’s cute though. Had to say something positive, no?

Checkpoint DIMI:
Daft? No, wrong.
Intriguing?
They might think so, I disagree.
Modern?
In the ‘70s perhaps. Perhaps.
International?
Can’t see that happening.

Personal score:  7/20 – Prediction: Stuck in the semi

So there we have it, the end of semi 2: time for a recap! Here’s Dimi’s Doom – my personal top 10 which happens to match my prediction completely… Danger ahead!

  1. Norway
  2. FYR Macedonia
  3. Estonia
  4. Netherlands
  5. Bulgaria
  6. Sweden
  7. Bosnia-Herzegovina
  8. Serbia
  9. Belarus
  10. Ukraine

Next stop: the direct finalists!

Overly opinionated. Slightly off my rocker. There's no such thing as a guilty pleasure.

  1. Bosnia-Herzegovina: I fully agree Dimi, not bad, not very noticible either, great to listen to in the car 13/20

Lithuania: sounds like five songs in one, the boy sells it well, it only needed some powerful backings and more harmonies 14/20
