We’re running up to the 2012 Contest, all entries for Baku have been chosen and it’s time to take a closer look at what we can expect to see and hear at the end of May. I’m reviewing everything in order of draw: I’ll first give my general thoughts on the countries’ choices, then I’ll subject them to the DIMI test and finally I’ll score them, accompagnied by a predicition of how I think they’ll do in Baku. I’ll be tackling them in pairs & on the menu today: Sweden & Georgia.
11. SWEDEN – Euphoria
Much in the same league as a lot of songs that are hitting charts across Europe because there’s no escape: ‘90s dance music reigns at the moment. Whether you want it to or not. So it’s a question of taste and Loreen is very clever in giving this an act you wouldn’t expect for this type of song: it makes its appeal even larger. I didn’t think this was the best song in MF actually but the complete package is very effective: it keeps you interested from start to end. She does need to polish her diction in the verses though and I’m curious to hear what kind of impact the three announced backing vocalist will have but at the moment I’ve got this Dima Bilan/Alexander Rybak feeling: who’s going to stop Hurriceen Loreen?
Daft? Let’s be honest: that hair makes her look like that thing from The Ring.
Intriguing? It tries to be – up to your personal taste if you’re willing to go along with it.
Modern? The musical build-up isn’t new but it is very now. The act definitely is.
International? The one with the largest international appeal in the field.
Personal score: 15/20 – Prediction: Final
12. GEORGIA – I’m a joker
I am temporarily dumbstruck. What the hell is this all about? It is all over the place: the video is just bad taste in a glitter jacket and musically we get four different styles for the price of one – the disco rhythm sounds awfully familiar by the way, can’t put my finger on it though. Is this the local Sasha Baron Cohen? Who cares, I don’t think he’s funny either.
Daft? No, stupid.
Intriguing? It does leave me in silence. Not in awe, though.
Modern? Anything but.
International? Borat managed to take over the world but I hope this one stays where he is.
Personal score: 1/20 – Prediction: Stuck in the semi
So, what do you think?
Tomorrow: Turkey & Estonia
